In de Champions League wou titelverdediger Chelsea FC zich woensdagavond verzekeren van een plek in de kwartfinales. Daarvoor moesten de Londenaren een 2-0-voorsprong van in de heenmatch verdedigen tegen Lille OSC. Romelu Lukaku moest echter wederom op de bank beginnen.
De Rode Duivel is bezig aan een teleurstellend comeback-seizoen bij de Blues. Hij had gehoopt dat zijn belangrijke goals op het WK voor clubs voor een ommekeer zouden zorgen, maar de situatie is sindsdien alleen van kwaad naar erger gegaan. Zo is Lukaku inmiddels een vaste bankzitter geworden onder Thomas Tuchel. Ook tegen Lille moest hij alweer vrede nemen met een vrij korte invalbeurt in de tweede helft.
Maar zijn prestaties zijn momenteel ook niet voldoende om aanspraak te maken op meer. Ook in Rijsel kwam Lukaku na zijn invalbeurt veel te weinig in het stuk voor. Maar het moet wel gezegd worden dat hij zelden bruikbare ballen krijgt aangespeeld. Iets wat ook heel wat volgers op de sociale media concludeerden: mits wat betere passes had Lukaku er een pak beter voorgestaan in Londen.
I feel for Lukaku to be honest, he plays with defenders who want to be strikers, midfielders who want to be strikers. He has no one who’s first thought is assist at Chelsea. Yes he has his own issues but his teammates don’t make it easy.

I get Lukaku talked smack about Chelsea which was an insult to his teammates... But I honestly hate the treatment he gets from them... They purposely cut him out the game with sloppy passes and that annoys me because I know the quality of player he is in front of goal.
