Sinds dit seizoen wordt er in de Champions League ook een VAR gebruikt, maar net als vaak in de Jupiler Pro League zorgt dat vooral voor veel controverse. Ook dinsdagavond was get weer prijs. Manchester City kreeg tegen Tottenham na tussenkomst van de VAR een penalty toegekend wegens een handsbal, terwijl enkele minuten later in Liverpool een identieke fase niet bestraft werd.
Op Twitter uitte zowat iedereen dan ook zijn onvrede over het huidige systeem.

Really not sold on the way VAR is being implemented. Use of technology is a good thing but there's something really jarring about a system which gives a decision like that penalty in retrospect - one barely anyone in the ground saw or many (if any) players actually appealed for.
