De voetbalwereld verkeert momenteel in grote shock. Liverpool-aanvaller Diogo José Teixeira da Silva (28), beter bekend als Diogo Jota, is donderdagochtend omgekomen bij een verkeersongeluk in Spanje. Ook zijn jongere broer André liet het leven. Het regent ondertussen bedroefde reacties via sociale media.

Verschrikkelijk ongelukDiogo Jota en zijn broer waren onderweg met de auto op de A52 in de Spaanse provincie Zamora. De auto van de twee broers raakte volgens Spaanse media van de weg en vatte vuur. BBC gaf ondertussen aan dat er sprake was van een klapband bij een inhaalmanoeuvre.
Volgens de BBC, dat de lokale politie heeft gesproken, is het ongeluk veroorzaakt door een klapband tijdens een inhaalmanoeuvre. Jota en zijn broer André, profvoetballer bij Penafiel, reden in een Lamborghini, die daardoor van de weg raakte en in brand vloog. pic.twitter.com/ry58txQ1x3

"We hebben met veel verdriet en immense pijn kennisgenomen van het tragische ongeluk waarbij Diogo Jota en zijn broer zijn omgekomen", schrijft de Portugese bond in een verklaring. "Op dit moment ontbreekt het ons aan woorden om dit enorme verlies te omschrijven."
Van de hemel naar de hel
Jota trouwde twee weken geleden nog met Rute Cardoso, met wie hij drie kinderen heeft. De aanvaller genoot nog van zijn vakantie na een druk seizoen met Liverpool en de nationale ploeg van Portugal.

Sinds 2020 was Diogo Jota actief voor de Engelse topploeg.. Met het team van coach Arne Slot werd hij afgelopen seizoen kampioen in de Premier League. Hij speelde in totaal 182 duels voor Liverpool, waarin hij 65 keer scoorde.
Het verschrikkelijk leed zorgt ook via sociale media voor heel wat beroering. De reacties stromen ondertussen binnen:
