Bij elk groot voetbaltornooi hoort tegenwoordig een mascotte. Zo ook bij het WK van komende winter in Qatar dus. In aanloop naar de loting van de poules werd zopas alvast de opvolger van de Russische hond Zabivaka, die de honneurs in 2018 waarnam, onthuld.
De nieuwe WK-mascotte luistert naar de naam La'eeb, een Arabisch woord dat volgens de FIFA "super-getalenteerde speler" betekent. Wat het figuurtje precies moet voorstellen, laat men op de officiële website dan weer in het midden. "Hij maakt deel uit van een parallel mascot-universum dat niet te beschrijven valt. Iedereen is is vrij om erin te zien wat hij wil."
Op sociale media worden daartoe alleszins reeds tal van pogingen ondernomen. Zo wordt La'eeb hier en daar vergeleken met een soort van lachende hoofddoek, anderen merken dan weer op dat de mascotte vooral sterk doet denken aan een spook. "Ter ere van alle sterfgevallen bij de bouw van de stadions", sneren heel wat volgers daarom richting de FIFA.
