In de Scala in Milaan werden maandagavond de FIFA Awards uitgereikt, een prijsuitreiking voor de beste voetballers en voetbalsters van het voorbije jaar. Het was uiteindelijk Lionel Messi die met de hoofdprijs aan de haal ging, de Argentijn haalde het voor Cristiano Ronaldo en Virgil van Dijk. Daarnaast kwamen ook heel wat nevencategorieën aan bod.
Zo werd ook het 'Elftal van het Jaar', met daarin onder meer Eden Hazard, bekend gemaakt. Dat elftal werd volgens de officiële website van de FIFA gekozen in samenspraak met duizenden voetballers wereldwijd, maar zorgde toch vooral voor veel kritiek op de sociale media. Zo stonden er vorig seizoen bijvoorbeeld vier Engelse ploegen in de Europese finales, toch haalden maar twee huidige PL-spelers het elftal.
Real Madrid kende dan weer één van zijn slechtste seizoenen in de recente geschiedenis, maar is wel dé hofleverancier van deze ploeg. Zelfs Marcelo, die een ronduit dramatisch jaar achter de rug heeft en niet eens werd geselecteerd voor de Copa America in eigen land, maakt deel uit van het elftal. De kritiek sprak dan ook voor zich.
